Meanwhile, Ford Prefect discovers that The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy has been taken over by a hostile corporate entity working for the Vogons, who create a dangerous, multidimensional "Guide Mark II" designed to destroy Earth across all parallel probability tracks. When Random steals this new Guide and escapes to an alternate Earth, Arthur, Ford, and Trillian race through space and time to intercept her, culminating in a darkly comic and notorious climax that brings a definitive, pessimistic close to the main characters' intersecting timelines.
